Spider mite

A picture from Hawaii Pest and Disease Image Gallery.

Spider mite is omnipresent pest in our greenhouse.  Spider mite punctures plant cells to feed on cucumber leaves (not confirmed on tomatoes), which cause damage to the plants.  Spider mite also spins silks to protect itself from enemy.  According to Kyra, the silk webs suffocate plants to death.

As with many other pests, spider mites gain rapid resistance to chemical pesticides due to rapid reproduction rate.  So we use Phytoseiulus persimilis as biopesticide.  For more useful information, check out Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spidermite
